A well-designed storage system can go a long way to reducing stock handling times. But it’s more than just doing the math on how many pallet locations can fit into a particular area.

Before thinking about the pallet racking design, there are a number of other considerations that impact the type, configuration and layout of the storage equipment.

Because these competing parameters each have such a large impact on the final make-up of the storage system, it is best to develop a design from the inside out. In other words, start by working out the operational needs of the business, such physical storage, picking and movement of stock and then design other features around the physical needs.

Here’s what the pallet racking design process looks like:

1. Define physical storage and stock movement requirements

2. Determine storage equipment that suits the storage requirements

3. Determine the materials handling equipment that can access the stock

4. Design the building shell around the storage system and materials handling equipment

5. Design building services around the storage equipment and movement of product and people
