STU Solution: Next generation
tote-to-person automation
The Sky Transfer Unit (STU) is an advanced picking solution designed to enhance warehouse efficiency by integrating high-density storage with high throughput capabilities.
It features picking heights up to 12 metres and operates within very narrow aisles, significantly reducing the overall storage footprint and maximising the use of existing space. The system incorporates the Q1P Tote Runner, which links the system with workstations and conveyors to unlock next level operational efficiency.

The Sky Transfer Unit (STU) integrates advanced robotics, innovative design, and intelligent management systems to streamline operations, offering picking rates of 150+ lines per hour.
Key Features and Advantages of the STU
Higher Efficiency
Combines advanced STU and Q1P robots, enhancing vertical tote transfer efficiency by over 2X and overall throughput by up to 3X, offering picking rates of 250+ lines per hour.
Higher Storage Capacity
Utilises multi-deep grab technology and vacuum suction pickup, enabling narrower robotised aisles and a 25%+ increase in storage capacity.
Greater Flexibility
Avoids fixed conveyor systems, supports cross-station operations, and adapts to fluctuating business needs. The system’s flexible layout fits irregular sites seamlessly.
Reduced Equipment Investment
Improved unit efficiency significantly reduces the cost proportion of robotic equipment while maintaining high performance.
COMPLETING THE SOLUTION: THE Q1P TOTE RUNNER
The Q1P Tote Runner is a new generation of lifting-type tote robots, and works seamlessly with the STU for retrieval and horizontal tote transport – linking the system with workstations or conveyors.
It can carry totes weighing up to 30kg and operates at speeds up to 2.5 meters per second, enhancing transport efficiency and throughput by 25%.
It supports double-deep storage and ensures efficient collaboration with STU robots, optimising space and performance. It allows for flexible adjustment of operational logic through the addition or removal of units, providing a controllable and flexible solution.
KEY BENEFITS
- Enhanced Accuracy: With its advanced tracking and positioning system, the Q1P Tote Runner ensures totes are always retrieved and delivered to the correct location, boosting accuracy in picking and replenishment tasks.
- Increased Stability: Designed to minimize motion-related disruptions, the Q1P Tote Runner ensures smooth operation, even at high speeds, reducing risks associated with tote tipping or misplacement.
- Scalable Integration: Whether for small-scale warehouses or large distribution centres, the Q1P Tote Runner can be scaled to meet specific operational needs, making it a flexible solution for growing businesses.
- Durability and Longevity: Built with high-quality materials and a focus on operational durability, the Q1P Tote Runner is engineered for long-term performance, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.
How does the STU compare to the CTU?
The STU system offers significant advantages over the CTU, including enhanced stability, uninterrupted power and connectivity, and faster, more precise operations. While both systems share similar racking environments, the STU’s design innovations make it the superior choice for optimised performance.
Let’s take a look at the key differences:
Floor Flatness
- CTU: Due to their height and the movement generated at the top during operation, CTUs require an exceptionally flat floor for stability.
- STU: STUs are more forgiving as they are attached to the racking system and equipped with ground wheels for added stability. While wheels are optional, they are strongly recommended for systems exceeding 6 metres in height.
Power and Connectivity
- CTU: Operates on batteries and requires consistent Wi-Fi coverage across the operating area. Network disconnections can disrupt operations.
- STU: Powered via a busbar fixed to the racking system, STUs maintain a permanent, cabled connection to the network. This eliminates the need for battery charging and ensures 24/7 uninterrupted operation.
Advantage: The busbar solution provides superior reliability and eliminates downtime associated with battery charging or network issues.
Racking System
- Both solutions use the same racking system to store and retrieve totes using retractable arms.
- The STU system includes a busbar and two fixed rails, distinguishing it from the CTU setup.
Note: These enhancements contribute to the STU’s overall efficiency without altering the basic racking structure.
Positioning System
- CTU: Relies on floor QR codes for positioning and scans tote barcodes to ensure accuracy. However, this process can be slower due to the pendulum effect caused by unit momentum during travel.
- STU: Uses QR codes fixed to the racking, avoiding issues like dirt and damage that can affect floor-based QR codes. The fixed rail design eliminates pendulum effects, enabling faster and more precise positioning.
Advantage: The STU’s fixed racking integration ensures more reliable positioning and quicker tote retrieval, enhancing overall system speed.
